UH Ahuja Medical Center Drusinsky Family Sports Medicine Complex Phase 2 is One-of-a-Kind

The Challenge

HKS completed the Phase 1 greenfield hospital in 2010 for University Hospitals (UH) on the Ahuja Medical Center campus. Since opening in 2010, UH Ahuja has embraced innovation and strived for excellence. To best serve the evolving needs of area residents, UH Ahuja must also adapt to the growth of the community needs and expand new services needed on this campus. The Ahuja Phase 2 project expansion introduces advanced comprehensive care programs and significantly expands inpatient and outpatient services on the campus including a new one-of-a-kind Sports Medicine Complex on a community hospital campus.

The Design Solution

After completing the Phase 1 greenfield hospital for University Hospitals on the Ahuja Campus in 2010, HKS began design of Phase 2. Starting with a master plan, the design team moved into the implementation of two new buildings: a new Pavilion and the Sports Medicine Complex. As part of the expansion, the Drusinsky Family Sports Medicine Complex will be a destination for professional, collegiate, and high school sports rehabilitation and medicine with advanced care, into a world class facility in one location, from testing and imaging to physical therapy, surgery and outpatient rehab.

The complex will provide clinical care and treatment for athletes of all ages, as well as provide the education and services to keep them at the top of their game. The Sports Performance Center, complete with a variety of turfs and playing surfaces, will offer space for sports rehabilitation and physical therapy for all patients. This program will provide excellent surgical, rehabilitation and injury-prevention programs to take care of our athletes at the highest level.

The Design Impact

Ahuja Medical Center is expanding its campus by more than 90% to allow caregivers to efficiently provide quality health care and enhance the patient experience. One unique feature on this campus is the new one-of-a-kind Sports Medicine complex on a hospital campus including a unique three-story field house with state-of-the-art sports rehab, PT/OT, aqua therapy, clinics and imaging services to make access to health care services easier and place a focus on wellness. The experience will be like walking into a half a football field with advanced rehab, clinical and imaging services.
