Detroit West Riverfront Plan Reconnecting a City to Its River

Detroit, Michigan, USA

The Challenge

Detroit sought to redevelop blighted areas west of downtown and to reconnect it to the riverfront.

The Design Solution

The plan creates a new open space system as part of reshaped urban pattern to overcome major infrastructure hurdles that have blocked neighborhoods from the river. HKS conceived a set of new streets and blocks to support six million square feet of mixed-use development and a 75-acre signature park.

The Design Impact

The new development responds to the character of adjacent neighborhoods and capitalizes on new waterfront investment by placing tall, dense development close to the riverfront. The plan reestablishes the civic value of the riverfront and strengthens the real estate value of the neighborhoods.
