Sharp Rees-Stealy Rancho Bernardo Medical Office Larger Exam Rooms, Scenic Views Improve Patient and Staff Experiences

The Challenge

HKS collaborated with Cunningham Group to deliver a new medical office building for Sharp Rees-Stealy in Rancho Bernardo, an affluent community in North San Diego County. Sharp’s goal is to offer quality care and programs in a caring, convenient, cost-effective and accessible environment. Designers were challenged to create a facility in keeping with Sharp’s goal of reducing costs that will then be put back into the San Diego community.

The Design Solution

A three-story glass wall at the entry provides views to the mountain range beyond and skylights introduce generous daylight into waiting areas. Exterior views are also found at the end of almost every corridor within the clinic, providing daylight to patients and staff. Each branch of the building features exam and procedure rooms, provider offices and a conferencing center. Onstage/offstage planning designed for this facility supports team-based care by providing separate patient and staff flows. This strategy clarifies responsibilities, improves communication and creates a better quality of delivery. The three-story, 105,000 square-foot medical office building features larger exam rooms and the ability to add more physicians and services over time. Collocation promotes greater efficiency and teamwork between physicians and nurses. Exterior views and daylighting contribute to patient and staff well-being. 

The Design Impact

The Rancho Bernardo Medical Office Building nearly doubles the size of Sharp’s existing space. The design team was committed to a responsible design approach and worked with Sharp to implement interior materials that minimize negative environmental impacts and promote positive life cycle economics.
