Four Seasons Marrakech A Modern Urban Oasis Evokes Moroccan Palace Living

The Challenge

This Four Seasons’ luxury resort, located in one of the world’s most coveted travel destinations, needed to blend in with — but not outshine — the ancient and natural beauty of Marrakech. The resort is steps away from the city’s Medina, or urban center, the largest souk (market) in Morocco, and the 12th Century Menara Gardens at the foot of the snow-capped Atlas Mountain range. The location required a design language to capture historical and natural elements in a luxurious and welcoming environment.

The Design Solution

The Four Seasons Marrakech takes its inspiration from the ancient Moroccan Medina. The hotel is conceived as a Moroccan Palace and the residences are inspired by the traditional riyâds of the organically composed Medina itself. Upon arrival, guests enjoy axial views to the southeast and the Atlas Mountains beyond. The lobby and lobby lounge overlook the main tree-lined water feature and pool, with the spa building on axis in the distance.

By linking all of the structures and spaces together with continuous passages, enclosures, walls and courtyards, both guests and residents alike discover the varied and numerous features the resort has to offer. HKS provided schematic design and engaged multiple partners including Reardon Smith as architect of record, French firm DL2A Architectes Associés for interiors and GA Design International for townhouse and villa design.

The Design Impact

The home-base for a luxurious North African adventure, the resort provides guests with a modern oasis in Marrakech’s exclusive Hivernage neighborhood, connecting guests to the city and its art, culture and shopping attractions. Moorish gardens, reflecting and swimming pools, spas, fountains, and floating restaurants traverse the arcades and courtyards, connecting the entire complex.
